How to Attach a Belt Buckle to a Leather Belt
Over time leather belts have moved from a mere utility item to a fashion accessory. They now come in several colors and designs, with matching buckles.
Buckles are typically used to fasten the ends of a belt and make it fit. In this article, we're sharing a simple technique to attach buckles, so if you'd like to make your own customized leather belt with its unique buckle, then this is for you.
Tools You'll Need
To begin, you'll need some common leathercraft tools, including;
A scratch awl
Leather hole punch tool
English point strap end punch
Steps to Follow
Using the leather hole punch tool or scratch awl, make two consecutive, horizontal holes at the end tip of the leather blank, leaving a small space between them.
Open the belt buckle and insert the end with the holes through the buckle's hinge.
Neatly fold the belt end tip underneath, so the two holes align.
Place the female ends of the Chicago screws through the holes on top, then flip the belt over.
Add some glue to the insides of the female screw ends and then force in the male ends.
At this point, you have successfully attached your buckle to the leather belt. Now all you need to do is add notches along the belt according to your waist size.
How to Measure Belt Notches
Measure your waist size using inches.
Use a scratch awl or other available craft master tools to make a hole on the belt equal to the length of your waist.
The next step is to mark the remaining holes. You should at least have five-hole marks with a length difference of 1.25 inches. The trick here is to move on either side of the original size hole marking size holes after a 1.25-inch width.
The next step is to expand the holes to the preferred size. Move 3 inches from the innermost notch on the belt and make a vertical mark with an awl.
Place your English point strap end punch on the vertical mark and punch through to make your belt tip. If your belt tips are not as smooth as you wanted, you can cover the edges with a permanent marker or some edge paint.
Types of Leather Belt Buckles
Leather belt buckles come in different shapes and sizes, so ensure that your preferred buckle fits your belt or leather blank before buying.
There are several types of belt buckles to choose from, and the list below highlights some of them as follows:
Screw Closure Belt Buckles
This leather belt buckle has a screw bar closure. The screw makes the belt buckle efficient and provides extra support to your pants all day. You can wear the leather belt buckle for a casual or formal occasion.
Stitch Closure Belt Buckles
These belt buckles often come in a woven style and are attached to the leather belt by stitching. This makes it easy to remove or adjust when necessary.
Tongue Belt Buckles
These box frame buckles are designed with a buckle bar, prongs, metal loop, and pins. The pins help secure the belt around the buckle's hinge when the leather strap is pushed through the holes and around the loop.
The tongue belt buckle has two designs; a single tongue buckle and a double tongue buckle. The single tongue buckle has one metal loop and a pin, while the double tongue buckle has a metal loop and two pins that increase your belt's grip. So, if you need your belt to be more sturdy, you should consider using the double tongue buckle.
Reversible Belt Buckles
The reversible belt buckle is one of the more versatile choices for belt makers. This buckle has two usable sides that usually have different colors. You can also customize your belt in two different designs on either side. This way, you get two different leather belt patterns for the value of just one.
Double Ring Belt Buckles
A double ring belt buckle comes with two rings that help fasten the belt. This belt buckle is mainly used as an accessory for casual outfits.
A dress belt buckle is mainly used to make belts that are paired with female dresses. The designs on this buckle are usually delicate and elegant. Therefore, if you wish to make a fashion statement at any event, you should add a dress belt with an elegant buckle to your outfit.
Western Belt Buckles
Western belt buckles are known for their large sizes and bold designs. They are a vital component of any western outfit. This buckle is usually attached to a leather belt much thicker than the standard belt designs. These buckles come with a hook and can be attached using snaps. All you need to do is weave the leather belt through the hook on the back of your buckle, then snap it down and hold it in place.
